The Global Chess League, held in Dubai from June 22 to July 2, showcased the world’s finest chess players, including active and former world champions in classical, rapid, and blitz categories. This prestigious event marked the second major chess tournament hosted in Dubai, following the World Chess Championship in 2021.

Unparalleled Gathering of Chess Icons, Superstars, and Prodigies

Dubai, the capital of the UAE, became the epicenter of the chess world for two weeks as 36 top-ranked players competed for ultimate glory. These players were categorized as Chess Icons, Superstars, and Prodigies, with notable names such as Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave leading the pack.

A Stellar Lineup of Players from Around the Globe

The Global Chess League featured six teams, each composed of six players. The teams included one Icon player, two male players, two female players, and one prodigy player born in 2002 or later. The tournament attracted renowned chess players like Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Alexander Grischuk, Daniil Dubov, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, Gukesh D, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Kateryna Lagno, Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, and even saw the return of Hou Yifan to the chessboard.

In a thrilling finale, the Triveni Continental Kings emerged triumphant by defeating the upGrad Mumba Masters. The match was decided in a sudden death round, where Jonas Buhl Bjerre of Denmark secured a crucial victory against Javokhir Sindarov of the Mumba Masters.

The Triveni Continental Kings faced a challenging start, winning only two out of their first six matches and finding themselves at the bottom of the points table. However, they orchestrated an epic comeback, led by Levon Aronian as the Icon player and Jonas Buhl Bjerre as the prodigy.
